WASHINGTON, Iowa ? Fairfield earned a share of the Southeast Conference title Thursday, knocking off rival Washington 6-1 in their final soccer game of the regular season.
Senior Roan Bachar scored four goals, and senior Randy Andermann and sophomore Jonah Marks added one goal each as the Trojans upped their conference record to 7-1, tying Mount Pleasant atop the conference standings.
Fairfield head coach Felisto Guezimane couldn?t have thought up a more fitting end to a memorable regular season.
?I?d like to congratulate my players for the conference title. We started the season a bit slow with a couple of heartbreaking losses, but we finished the season very strong. We worked very hard and they deserved to be champions,? said Guezimane.
Bachar scored the first goal of the game midway through the first half, but the Demons equalized shortly thereafter. Marks restored the lead with an assist from Bachar minutes later, and the Trojans never looked back on their way to taking a 5-1 lead into halftime.
?We played a very controlled game last night and didn?t give too many chances to the Demons. We put them on their heels for most of the game,? said Guezimane.
Bachar had two assists. Austin Lauderman and Darrin Dimmitt provided one each.
With one goal now accomplished, the Trojans now focus on another.
?A good way for the seniors to finish their high school careers as champions. We accomplished one of our goals for the season and move on to the next, which is to qualify for state,? Guezimane said.
Fairfield (11-5, 7-1 SEC) opens up the first round of substate Monday in Fairfield vs. Keokuk.
