It took the Fairfield boys? basketball team 21 games to get on a winning streak, but their first of the season is coming at the best possible time.
The Trojans rolled to their second straight win in Friday?s season finale, holding off a late Fort Madison rally and earning a 57-52 win.
?We feel like we?re playing our best basketball at the right time and we?ve got to be happy with that,? said Fairfield head coach Tyler Miklo. ?We talked about [winning out], making it a building process and building all the way up to the game against Centerville [to open postseason play].?
Fairfield senior Brent Buch got the Trojans rolling with the team?s first six points, and Fairfield held a 10-4 advantage after one quarter.
The Bloodhounds opened the second quarter on a 6-1 run to narrow the deficit to 11-10. They then took a 19-16 lead in the final seconds prior to halftime while holding Fairfield to six points in the quarter.
The third quarter was almost all Fairfield, however. Junior Dillon Fry scored the Trojans? first six points and senior Davis Lowenberg scored six at the back end of the quarter as the Trojans went up by nine.
?I thought we made some nice adjustments in the third quarter. A couple extra passes got us some pretty good looks and we did a much better job rebounding in the second half, too,? said Miklo.
The Trojans built a lead as large as 13 points in the final period but Fort Madison refused to go away. The Bloodhounds went on a 14-6 run in a span of three minutes, though Fairfield did just enough to hold on.
Lowenberg scored 19 points on 9-for-12 free throw shooting, and the senior also had a team-high eight boards. Fry finished with 17 points and three steals, and Buch also scored in double figures with 13 points along with three steals. Cody Kool had six assists and six rebounds, while Nik Fitch added two dimes.
Fairfield (8-13, 2-6 SEC) kicks off Substate 6 District 12 basketball at Centerville next Monday.
