CHARITON — Golf has many rules and knowing all of them may be harder than the game itself.
The Winterset and Albia boys tied with the best team score Thursday in an 18-hole tournament, the Chariton invite. The decision went to a tiebreaker, another tiebreaker and another until the sixth tiebreaker decided that Winterset was the champion.
Sam Weaton parred six holes on his way to an 88 round. Trojan teammate Nate Smithburg had a 90. A stroke behind was Brad Smithburg at 91. Evan Haines completed the Fairfield scoring with a 96.
Fairfield sophomore Max Weaton was disqualified Thursday at the Chariton Invite for signing an incorrect score card, but the Trojans were able to place fifth as a team.
Fairfield hosts the Southeast Conference boys meet Tuesday.

Golden Hawks have low 4 in triangular
RIVERSIDE — Mid-Prairie set a season-low team score of 179 Thursday to defeat Lone Tree (216) and Highland at Blue Top Ridge. Having golfed the course Tuesday, the Golden Hawks confidence was evident.
“I was very pleased with how we played,” Golden Hawks coach Kelby Bender said. “They used their knowledge of the course and greens to play well.”
Meet medalist Dominic McCain started his round by making a long birdie putt on the first hole and carded a round of 40. Mid-Prairie teammate Warren Scarff’s 44 was the runner-up score. Aiden Bush posted a nice round of 46 for third and Drew Schlabaugh produced his third 49 in a row at Blue Top.
Mid-Prairie plays at Durant today and hosts West Liberty Tuesday. A Friday trip to Pine Knolls in Knoxville awaits for a sectional meet.
Only three Huskies golfed. Brock Schaedler hit a 49 with Jamison Kasparek scoring a 51 and Payton Yeggy 53.
