IOWA CITY ? The Fairfield boys? track and field team stretched its legs at Thursday?s Demon Indoor to open the season.
The Trojans competed against nearly 30 teams on the University of Iowa campus, including larger schools such as Iowa City High and Des Moines Roosevelt as well as conference rivals Washington and Keokuk. As the first meet of the season it proved a valuable litmus test for Fairfield head coach Brian Dunlap.
?We weren?t planning on going up to win a lot of events,? said Dunlap. ?But it was nice to finally see how the kids stacked up against runners they?ve competed against in the past and some new runners, as well.?
The top placing for the Trojans came from senior Corbin Harwood in the 60-meter hurdles. After missing the finals and taking 19th in the event last year, Harwood made the cut Thursday and ran an 8.93 to finish ninth. Junior teammate Jonny Swanson, who was running the 60-meter hurdles for the first time, was 23rd with a clocking of 9.39, and Austin Francisco finished 42nd (10.02).
?I thought it was a good event for us and a good start to the night,? Dunlap said. ?All three of those guys did a really nice job.?
In the 60-meter dash, a trio of senior Trojans finished in the top 40 out of 85 runners. Braz Johnson finished 31st (7.59), Zach Vivier was 32nd (7.60) and Max Johnson took 36th place (7.64).
Other top individual finishes came from sophomores Riley Hammel and Vince Horras in the 800-meter run. Hammel crossed the line in 2:18.63 to take 26th and Horras wasn?t far behind with a 34th-place finish in 2:21.77. Dillon Fry paced the Trojans in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.07, while Blake Wright came in 48th at 25.21.
The team of Alex Love, Vince Horras, Riley Hammel and Jordan Whitney finished 16th in the 4x800 relay (9:11.47), and the sprint medley relay of Kooper Dahlstrom, Vivier, Dillon Fry and Love was 13th (4:03.50).
In the field, Cody Kool placed 24th in the shot put with a throw of 41 feet. Jake Mineart was 31st at 39-feet, 7-inches.
?I left there pleased with our effort and saw some good things to build on this spring,? Dunlap added.
Fairfield will continue the indoor season March 16 at the Central College Indoor in Pella and opens the outdoor season March 22 at Washington.
