MOUNT PLEASANT ? The Fairfield boys? track team was unable to field any champions at the Southeast Conference meet and fell to fourth place in the team standings.
Fairfield finished with a final tally of 51.5 as Mount Pleasant kept the title in Panther country scoring 111 points, 10 ahead of second-place Fort Madison.
?Not winning any events makes it hard to compete for the title,? said Fairfield coach Brian Dunlap. ?There are some tough individuals in our league so it makes it tough to win, and I thought our kids performed well.?
Corbin Harwood led the Trojans on both the track and in the field thanks to a trio of runner-up finishes. Individually, the senior placed second in the high jump clearing 6-feet, 2-inches, and he had the second fastest time in the 110-meter hurdles at 15.39 seconds. Harwood also helped the shuttle-hurdle team to a second-place finish (1:01.70) along with Nick Jackson, Jonny Swanson and Austin Francisco.
Though the high jump and 110-highs were the highest placings for Fairfield in individual events, the distance medley team of Braz Johnson, Justin Hammes, Vince Horras and Jordan Whitney also tacked on a silver (3:56.18).
Max and Braz Johnson, Zach Vivier and Blake Wright were third in the 4x200 (1:35.79), as was the Drake-qualifying 4x100 team of Max and Braz Johnson, Vivier and Harwood (45.96). Trojan junior Alex Love set a personal best in the open-800 Saturday morning to finish with bronze (2:04.97), as well.
Max Johnson and Dillon Fry added a pair of fourth-place finishes in individual races. Johnson ran the 100 in 11.83 seconds, and Fry finished the 400 in 53.46 seconds.
The Fairfield boys now turn their focus to districts Thursday in Mount Pleasant. As always, the Trojans will need to be at their best with the SEC field plus Centerville, Oskaloosa and Williamsburg added to the mix.
