FORT MADISON — The Southeast Conference boys soccer race was in for a shake-up on Thursday evening, as the Fairfield boys put a dent in first-place Fort Madison.
The Trojan boys beat the Bloodhounds on the road, winning 2-1 in penalty kicks. The Fairfield girls fell 10-0.
The boys’ game was tied 0-0 at halftime, and nobody broke through until Jaxen Allen found the net for the Trojans with 28:42 remaining in the game.
Fort Madison’s Henry Graham tied the game at 1-1 with under 10 minutes remaining, and the game went into overtime, and then double overtime, with no shots finding the net.
In penalty kicks, Fairfield’s Mihn Truong, Ezra Kuster and Allen each had goals to put the Trojans up 3-2. Carter Stark put the game-clincher through to end penalty kicks at 4-2.
Despite the win, Fairfield was outshot 28-11. Dalton Drish had six saves in 110 minutes in net.
Fort Madison scored nine first-half goals against Fairfield in the girls’ game. Jaden Haynes had 11 saves in the game, which lasted just 80 minutes before the mercy rule, but the Trojans never got a shot off.
The Fairfield boys are now 4-3 overall and 2-3 in conference play, having now won three games in a row. The Trojan girls are 8-0 and 7-0.
