The Trojan boys? soccer team fell in heartbreaking fashion, 3-2, to No. 13 ranked Pella in the second home game of the season Thursday.
Tied 1-1 with under a minute remaining, the Trojans surrendered the winning goal with 30 ticks left on the clock at Trojan Stadium.
?We should have held the ball and let the clock run down with that much time left, and the result would have been different,? said Fairfield head coach Felisto Guezimane. ?But it?s definitely a tough lesson to learn. I told my players to keep their heads high and move on to the next game.
Fairfield goals came from Kyle Thomas and Stian Hoff, with one assist coming from Kendall Mickels. Hoff put the Trojans up 2-1 in the second half before Pella tied the game back at the 20-minute mark.
The contest showed marked improvement from a season ago, when a similar Little Dutch team defeated Fairfield 8-0 in Pella.
?It was very hard to take a loss like that, but I was proud of my players for the fight they put out tonight,? Guezimane added. ?My players showed heart and determination against a very good and ranked team.?
The Trojans (2-1) will look to shake off the loss with a game at rival Mount Pleasant on Monday.
Girls blanked
PELLA ? The Trojan girls? soccer team was shut out 10-0 at third-ranked (Class 2A) Pella Thursday night.
Fairfield (1-1) now turns its attention to its home opener Monday vs. Mount Pleasant.
