DES MOINES — The big Class 3A boys track and field stories came in the jumps for Fairfield and the throws for Washington, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t some big time action on the track itself. A balanced weekend for both teams put the Trojans and Demons in the Top-20.
Fairfield scored 27 points, combining a big weekend from the jumpers with some excellent results in mid-distance events. That included a new school record from the team’s third-place distance medley relay team of Dylan Adam, Ethan Bisgard, Ousman Saine and Gabe Tejada.
“This feels amazing,” said Saine. “This is our group’s third time running together, so it feels amazing.”
The team crossed in 3:28.91. The quartet includes three seniors; Adam, Saine and Tejada.
“I’m going to miss these guys next year,” Bisgard said. “But I was so happy to be a part of it.”
Adam was unable to score in the 400-meter hurdles, but his contribution to the sprint medley helped the Trojans polish off a huge bounce back year for the program.
“It was really important,” Adam said. “We were trying to do everything right, and spend time together. I think our chemistry is a really good thing too.”
Tejada’s weekend wasn’t done. He took fourth place in the 800, crossing the tape in 1:53.40.
“I’m still in shock, if I’m being completely honest,” said Tejada, who ran in the fastest 800-meter race of the weekend. “To have my name on the board with (Western Dubuque’s) Quintin Nauman, (Des Moine’s Christian’s) Caleb Ten Pas and (Pella’s) Canaan Dunham, I’m still in shock from that.”
Washington’s Tyler Alderton had quite the 800-meter race himself, taking eighth in his final state competition, and crossing the line in 1:57.33, a new personal record.
Alderton wasn’t the Demons’ only scorer on the track. The 4X800 team of Logan McDole, Sawyer Tschantz, Carson Ryan and Alderton took eighth, to give the Demons one more team point. In total, Washington scored 13.
