Fairfield boys tennis falls to Maharishi, Burlington
Pioneers hand Trojans first loss of season, greyhounds grind out 1-point victory

FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield boys tennis team dropped a pair of matches this week to start the 2022 season. Maharishi bested the Trojans 7-2 on Monday and Burlington nipped them 5-4 on Tuesday.
Maharishi won five of the six singles matches on Monday to clinch the meet early. The Pioneers’ biggest win came in the No. 2 match, where Zak Askar defeated Jace Hanes in three sets.
Jayanta Wegman swept Brendan Marcellus 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 2 match. Polo Altynski-Ross defeated Aidan Flanagan 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 4 match. No. 5 Dominic Dupoux beat Jack Unger 6-1, 6-2. Makhi Kanhiu took down Grady Flynn 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 6 match.
Fairfield’s lone singles win came in the No. 1 match, where Garrett Flanagan defeated Ruimin Luo 6-2, 6-4.
Flanagan was also involved in the Trojans’ lone doubles win. He and Hannes defeated Luo and Askar in three sets in the top doubles game.
Wegman and Altynski-Ross won the No. 2 doubles game 6-1, 6-0 over Marcellus and Anderson. In the No. 3 match, Dupoux and Kahiu defeated Unger and Flynn 6-1, 6-3.
Back on their home courts at Fairfield Middle School, the Trojans took two singles and two doubles wins from Burlington. The lone singles wins came from No. 5 Unger (6-2, 6-2) and No. 6 Flynn (6-0, 6-0).
In doubles, Flanagan and Hannes took the No. 1 match in there sets, and Unger and Flynn won in three sets at No. 3.
Fairfield is now 0-2 on the season. They will be at Mt. Pleasant on April 11.
