One of the top baseball teams in the state was on full display on Monday night in Washington.
In a conference doubleheader, the rival Fairfield Trojans came to face the Demons, and put on strong displays of their ability in both games, claiming the sweep, with victories of 3-0 and 15-3.
In Game 1, offense was hard to come by for the Demons, as Fairfield left-hander Cameron Baumann threw seven innings of three-hit baseball, striking out 15 batters in the process.
However, the Demons had opportunities throughout the game to tie the game up after Fairfield took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
?If you look at the first game, it?s 3-0,? Washington baseball head coach Nathan Miller said. ?Early, it was 1-0, and we have a player called out on a very tough low pitch, then the next hitter hits a triple in the gap. That could have made it a 1-1 game. We had another later on in the game as well, and there were some things that were out of our control tonight, but it?s one game in the whole season. We have to learn and toughen up.?
In the contest, Demon junior Michael Gier threw six strong innings for the Demons, allowing six hits and striking out six, only allowing two runs.
Michael Ellingson with a triple, Zach Londberg and Ryan Loy all picked up hits in the contest for Washington.
In Game 2, the Trojans jumped on the Demons, taking a 6-1 lead after the top of the third.
Dakota Kron grounded out to bring in a run in the bottom of the third, while Bryce Craff hit an RBI single in the fourth to make it 6-3, but a nine-run sixth inning from the Trojans ended the game.
?The last couple of games I?ve been charting where pitches were at, either in, middle or outside, and 22 of 26 hits tonight were down the middle,? Miller said. ?You can?t miss your spots. It?s a matter of throwing strikes at any time in the count. It was pitching and baserunning that did not do well tonight.?
The Demons will focus their attention on Wednesday night, when they hit the road to face Williamsburg.
