WATERLOO — It was a tough road for the state doubles duo of Garrett Flanagan and Jace Hannes, who fell twice in their return trip to the state tournament on Tuesday.
The Fairfield group had an unlucky draw to start, taking on Waverly-Shell Rock’s Myers and Ramker, a team that was ranked No. 4 coming in, and went on to play in the third place match.
The Waverly-Shell Rock team took both games. The Trojans lost games 6-3 and 6-0 to fall to the consolation bracket.
In the consolation bracket, the Trojans took on Grundy Center’s Laube and Lauver, a team that was also swept in the first round.
In the consolation game, Fairfield took the first set in a thriller, winning 7-6, but Grundy Center battled back to win the next two.
Grundy Center won the second set, 6-2, which forced a 10-point tiebreaker. Grundy Center advanced with a 10-5 victory.
Grundy Center would go on to lose against the very same Xavier team that Fairfield fell to in the district championship.
It was the second-straight state qualification for the Trojan duo. Last year, the two went 1-2. Both Flanagan and Hannes are seniors.
