Junior Marisa Repp smashed a no-doubt, two-run homer over the left field fence Friday to spur Fairfield?s offense in a 5-2 victory over visiting Eddyville-Blakesburg in Fairfield.
The two-run shot came in the bottom of the first inning of Friday?s nightcap and helped salvage a split with the visitors. The Rockets won the opening game 7-0.
Repp, who also slapped an RBI single in the second game, finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run scored for Fairfield. The Trojans totaled 11 hits in the nightcap after recording just three in the first game.
?In the first game, they had a three-run homer that sort of got us out of the game, but [Repp] started the second game off with her own homer, and it sort of gave us momentum,? explained Fairfield head coach Bob Bradfield.
After Repp?s shot handed the Trojans a 2-0 advantage in the first, Mackenzie Flattery crossed home plate on a passed ball in the third inning for a 3-0 lead. The Rockets cut the deficit to one run in the top of the fourth, but starter Haley Grunwald got out of a bases-loaded jam with a groundout.
The Trojans tacked on one run in each of their final two frames to preserve the win for Grunwald, who didn?t give up a run the rest of the game. The senior starter allowed six hits and two runs ? none earned ? in the seven-inning complete game.
?Haley did a good job for us. We changed speeds quite a bit going to her, and she kept the ball down in the strike zone, which was the key for her,? said Bradfield.
From the plate, Sydney Burnett was 3-for-4 with two runs, and she swiped two bases from the leadoff spot. Karley Williams finished 2-for-3 with one run scored.
Fairfield?s Alli Deao took the loss in the first game of Friday?s doubleheader. The freshman starter went all seven innings and was hit with seven runs, three of them earned. She gave up 10 hits and no walks while striking out none.
The Rockets carried a 3-0 lead into the second inning thanks to a three-run bomb from Jarrah Jensen, who finished the opener with five runs batted in. Eddyville?s hot bats later scored one in the third inning and three more in the top of the fifth.
?[Deao] wasn?t hitting her spots, but you?ve got to give Eddyville a lot of credit. Their hitters were ready to hit,? said Bradfield.
Fairfield?s Williams was 1-for-2, Repp finished 1-for-3 and Mackenzi Harwood got on base with one base knock. Jolea Burkhart drew a walk.
Weather permitting, the Trojans (3-1) are at Washington on Wednesday.
