KNOXVILLE — Fairfield boys’ soccer season came to a close on Monday night with a 2-1 loss to the Chargers of Chariton in the first round of the 2A substate 6 bracket.
The Trojans, who came into the contest having won back-to-back games, never led on the night.
The Charger’s Mason Smith opened up the scoring with a goal in the first half. Smith then set up teammate William Yeager for an early goal in the second.
Fairfield couldn’t recover. Carter Moore got the Trojans on the board in the final five minutes off a free kick that took a deflection and hit the back of the net.
That proved to be the last goal of 2024 for Fairfield as they end 6-7. Dalton Drish finished with three saves for the Trojans.
In all, Fairfield took just five shots, three of which were on goal, in the substate bout. Meanwhile, Chariton took 17 shots, 11 on target.
