Fairfield edges Burlington on the mats
Trojans hold on in final match for first SEC dual win of the season
FAIRFIELD — Fairfield wrestling grabbed its first Southeast Conference dual win of the year on Thursday night as the Trojans slipped by Burlington 41-39.
Early on, it looked as if the Trojans were going run away with it building up a 35-18 advantage through the first nine matches.
Fairfield got wins from Dre Smithburg (215), Logan Johnson (285), Cael McCabe (113), Julian Pumphrey (132), Aiden Westercamp (138) and Zandrik Allison (144) through that span.
Smithburg, Westercamp and Allison were all winners by fall. Pumphrey won by tech fall, 17-2, while McCabe and Johnson notched wins by forfeit.
Burlington closed the gap through the next four matches. Back-to-back forfeits at 150 and 157 made it 35-30. Then at 165, the Trojans Calvin McClain was topped by the Grayhounds Tanner Burchett via tech fall, which knotted the dual at 35-35.
Fairfield’s Dain Burkhart picked up a huge with at 175, pinning the Grayhound’s Micah Zaugg after 3:20 of action to pull the Trojans away once again.
All Fairfield needed to do was not lose by fall in the final bout and they succeeded. The Trojan’s Carter Moore battled for as long as he could at 190 and ended up losing by major decision, 9-0, but it was enough to secure the win for Fairfield.
The Trojan girls were also in action on the night. Fairfield’s lone victory came from Samantha Lyons at 170. Lyons pinned Burlington’s Anabell Albert in 1:14.
In the other contests, Vianney Gonzalez lost in the final round by fall to Burlington’s Sarina Cline at 120. Gonzalez was also pinned by the Grayhound’s Kyra Nash at 125. Alejandra Carminhato wrestled a pair of matches at 135 and 140, suffering losses by fall.
