KEOKUK — Fairfield football knows how to win games late.
After splitting their last two games, with a three point loss to Fort Madison and a one point with over Knoxville, the Trojans did what they had to do Friday night against Keokuk.
After both teams were tied following the first four quarters of play, it was the Trojans who capitalized on a missed opportunity by Keokuk to take the 16-15 victory.
Friday nights contest wasn’t a high scoring affair, as with the sloppy conditions both teams were only able to rattle of field goals in the first half.
Keokuk took the advantage after the first quarter leading 3-0, but the Trojans answered back in the second with a field goal of their own.
The offensive struggles continued into the second half, but both teams were able to find the end zone.
It was the Chiefs scoring first once again with touchdown in the third, but they would miss the extra point.
Fairfield didn’t have an answer in the quarter, but the Trojans did were able to limit the Chiefs to just one score.
In the fourth, Fairfield got the six points they needed to tie the game and needed just an extra point to take the lead. Much like Keokuk though, the Trojans missed the kick and knotted the game at 9-9.
Neither team would score again in regular time, forcing overtime.
In the extra period of play, both the Trojans and Chiefs found the end zone. Keokuk scored first, but would miss the extra point, which would be the difference. Fairfield would take the win, with a touchdown off a five yard Tate Allen rush and a Drew Twohill extra point.
With the win, Fairfield improves to 3-2 on the season. They will host West Burlington (1-4) this week for homecoming.
