The Fairfield eighth-grade girls? basketball team went out a winner on its home court Thursday vs. Ottumwa.
Fairfield fell behind 2-0 at the start of the ?A? game, but from there the Trojans never trailed and ran away with a 56-30 victory.
The Trojans led 16-8 after the first quarter, and a 15-0 run to open the second quarter gave the ?A?-teamers a 31-8 advantage. Ottumwa finished the first half on a 7-0 run to cut the score to 33-15.
Leading Trojan scorers were Mackenzie Flattery with 13 points, Taylor Ferrel with 10, Sierra Vogt with eight and Delaney Neil with seven. Alli Deao, Molly Ryan and Mikaela Amendt added six apiece.
?The girls played our most complete game tonight,? said Fairfield head coach Derek Philips. ?Tonight really showed what this group of girls are capable of. I have no doubts they will be major contributors to the Fairfield girls? basketball program.?
Fairfield?s ?B? team followed the ?A? team?s impressive showing with a 19-8 victory.
The halftime score sat at 4-2 for Fairfield until Lindsey Repp fired off nine of her 11 points in the second half to spark the offense. Brittany Hoskins, Natalie Jones, Holly McCoy and Shannon Hopwood all scored two points.
?I was a little nervous after the first half thinking it could be another low scoring game,? said Philips. ?We came out firing the second half and took control of the game. These girls played with so much heart and effort tonight. They deserved this win.?
As the two teams enter the final match-up of the season tonight at Washington, the ?A? team record sits at 8-3 and the ?B? team is 5-6 overall.
