INDIANOLA — The Fairfield girls basketball team was two possessions away from one of the biggest upsets of the season, but instead Saturday night’s Class 4A Regional Semifinal matchup with No. 4 Indianola marked the end of the Trojan postseason run.
Fairfield held a five-point lead to begin the fourth quarter, but Indianola turned it on late to squeak by with a 44-40 victory.
Pat Pacha said that his squad was going to give the Indians everything they could take following the Trojans’ quarterfinal win over Oskaloosa, and they did just that and a little more.
The Trojans were right in the mix all night long. Indianola held a slim 7-5 lead after one quarter. It would be the only lead for the Indians at a quarter’s end besides the final.
Fairfield went on to outscore Indianola 26-19 over the next two quarters, holding a 31-26 lead at the start of the fourth.
Fairfield had Indianola exactly where they wanted them. The Trojans held all the momentum to start the fourth, but the Indians were quick to take it back.
Indianola picked the right time to get hot and put together its best quarter of the night. Fairfield was outscored 18-9 in the fourth, which was enough for the Indians to scrape by and advance.
There’s no doubt that the Fairfield senior-led squad came to play.
Delaney Breen paced the Trojans with 16 points. Danielle Breen finished with 12 in her final game. Mallory Lyon added nine points. Brynley Allison chipped in three points and five rebounds. Kelsey Pacha pulled down seven rebounds for Fairfield.
The Trojans end their season with a 13-9 record.
