KEOKUK — Friday night ended up being a tough one for the Trojans of Fairfield.
A trip to Keokuk for a matchup with the Chiefs ended with a pair of losses as the Trojan girls fell 67-17 and the boys 69-43.
In the girls’ contest, the Trojans fell behind early and could never get back into it.
The Chiefs were near flawless through the first five minutes. Keokuk put together a 16-0 run through that span.
Fairfield was able to put some points on the board thanks to some stellar shooting from Grace Lyon, who scored all eight of the Trojans points in the first period.
However, the eight points were all for naught as Keokuk tallied a whopping 27 points in the first quarter alone.
Through the first eight minutes, both teams put up their highest quarter total of the night.
The Trojans offensive struggles only got greater as the game went on as the Chiefs held them to just two points in both the second and third quarter.
Meanwhile, Keokuk scored 25 points of its own through the two frames, building leads of 44-10 at halftime and 52-12 after three quarters.
In the fourth, Keokuk went on to outscore Fairfield 15-5 to put a seal on it.
The Trojan girls drop to 0-7 with the loss.
In the boys’ game, some hot shooting from outside kept the Trojans right with the Chiefs.
Fairfield connected on four threes in the first quarter, which culminated in all 12 of its opening points.
In all, the Trojans would hit nine three pointers on the night, amounting to over half their field goals in the loss.
The Chiefs’ center in 6’10 Jaxon Clark made it extremely tough for the Trojans to finish around the rim. Clark was also a thorn for the Trojan defense as he notched a double double with 34 points and 23 rebounds.
The shooting continued into the early stages of the second quarter as Riley Perkins and Ethan Bisgard connected on deep balls, but they couldn’t keep it up as Keokuk went on to score a game high 20 points in the second to make it 35-23 at the half.
From then on out, the Trojans could never get back into it as Keokuk won the scoring battle in the second half 34-20.
Perkins led Fairfield with 17 points in the loss. Bisgard finished with 12. Voss Richardson and Andrew Myers both scored five. Eli Zillman added four.
The Trojan boys move to 1-5 with the loss.
