FAIRFIELD — Fairfield football just couldn’t find a breakthrough against Solon in the pair’s Class 3A District 5 bout on Friday night.
The No. 3 Spartans scored 35 unanswered in the first half on their way to a 42-6 victory over the Trojans.
From the opening whistle, Fairfield struggled to find holes in the Solon defense.
After giving the ball back to the Spartans on a scoreless opening drive, Solon capped off a short drive with a 29-yard touchdown by Conlan Poynton. After the extra point made it 7-0, Solon would never give up the advantage.
However, Fairfield showed poise against the stout Solon front.
On the Trojan’s ensuing drive, a mix of ground attack and passing prowess, highlighted by the connection of quarterback Sam Weaton and receiver Bode Hoskins, helped them march all the way down to the Spartan’s 20-yard line.
But as quick as Fairfield was able to move the ball, Solon was just as quick to stunt the Trojans in their tracks.
Solon stopped Fairfield four straight times, forcing the Trojans into a turnover on downs.
From then on, the Spartans went over 80 yards and scored on a Tyler Bell two-yard rush.
The score gave Solon a 14-0 lead with 2:41 remaining in the first quarter.
For the rest of the first half, it was all Solon as they put up an additional 21 unanswered.
The Spartans scored once more on Poynton’s second touchdown run of the night, this time from seven yards out to make it 21-0.
Fairfield got a huge stop on the defensive end midway through the second quarter.
Solon had the ball at the Fairfield five-yard line, but a fumble recovery gave the Trojans possession.
But with Fairfield deep in its own territory, Solon thwarted any sort of momentum, forcing the Trojans to punt once again.
On the return, Solon’s Jack McCarty took the punt to the house from around the 50-yard line putting Solon up 28-0 with 7:28 to go.
The Spartans scored once more before the half on a pick-6.
At the half, Solon led 35-0. It was a deficit that Fairfield would never overcome.
Solon was the first to score in the second half. This time the Spartans notched a 48-yard touchdown run to go up 42-0.
That proved to be the final score of the night for the Spartans.
Meanwhile, Fairfield finally got on the board in the third when Weaton connected with Hoskins for a 12-yard touchdown.
With the loss, Fairfield drops to 3-5 on the season. The Trojans will play their final regular season game on Friday against Grinnell (5-3) on the road.
