Fairfield was in one of the toughest football districts last season and it’s looking like that’s going to be the case once again.
The Trojans bring back some key pieces from their 2023 squad, but there’s also going to be some new faces stepping into the limelight as well.
Fairfield finished second to last a year ago with a district record of 1-4, but the district featured state champion Williamsburg, powerhouse Solon, Grinnell and Benton.
Solon went 5-0 in the district, while Williamsburg finished 4-1. Grinnell ended 3-2, while Benton went 2-3. South Tama also competed, finishing at the bottom of the standings at 0-5.
The Trojans didn’t throw much last season, just attempting 47 passes. But Sam Weaton who was undercenter for much of the season will have to be replaced.
Fairfield’s doing all right in the rushing department. The top three ball carries are back with leading rusher Cason Miller (724 yards), Wyatt Johnson (308 yards) and Lucas Konczal (71 yards) all closing out their senior year.
Miller scored a team high six touchdowns in 2023.
Receiving wise, Miller caught three passes. Konczal and Dylan Adam were the only other two that were not seniors to catch a pass.
Defensively, Konczal is the high returning tackler. He posted a team third best with 17 total.
