FAIRFIELD — Fairfield’s five-year losing streak to Fort Madison on the football field came to a crushing end on Friday night at Trojan stadium.
The Trojans ran all over the Bloodhounds en route to a 55-15 win, the first win for Fairfield this season.
The Trojans scored eight touchdowns on the night. Every single one of them was from the running game.
“We really challenged our line to buckle down on their assignments,” said Fairfield head coach Matt Jones. “You could tell they played a little more confidently.”
Fort Madison scored the first touchdown of the game, getting a 1-yard rushing score from Marcus Guzman early in the first quarter, but the Bloodhound offense didn’t do much after that.
On the other side, Fairfield was ready to strike, and when the second quarter started, the game quickly shifted to being all about the Trojan running game.
Ethan Bisgarad scored first, taking the ball from inside the 15-yard line to put the Trojans on the board with less than five minutes remaining in the half. Luke Konczal converted for two, and it was 8-7 Trojans.
A Spencer McCready interception on the ensuing Bloodhound possession gave the Trojans a short field. Bisgard scored again, this time from eight yards out, and the PAT made it 15-7.
“I just love to punch it in for our team, and do whatever I can to help,” Bisgard said. “I just want to win football games.”
Right before halftime, the Trojans struck again. After Fort Madison missed a field goal that would have cut the lead to five, Luke Konczal stunned the visiting Bloodhound fans by dashing 69 yards downfield, and the PAT gave the Trojans a 22-7 advantage.
Voss Richardson got in on the action early in the third quarter. Fort Madison fumbled on its very first play of the period, and Richardson eventually punched in a short drive with a one-yard run, making it 29-7.
Later in the third, it was Konczal again. He found even more room on a long run, this time scoring from 74 yards out to bust the game wide-open.
“The guys just blocked to the whistle,” Konczal said. “I had a couple of long runs where I wasn't even touched.”
Konczal’s seconds core helped make it 35-15 after three quarters. Bisgard, Zandrik Allison and Jackson Hollander all found the end zone in the fourth.
“Our backs ran hard,” said Coach Jones. “They blocked well and they carried out fakes well.”
In all, the Trojans ran for 472 yards. Konczal led the way with 191 yards and two touchdowns. Allison ran for 120 yards and a score. Bisgard went for 56 yards and three scores. Richardson and Wyatt Johnson finished with 40 and 39 rushing yards respectively.
Richardson hardly had to throw the ball at all. He completed one of five passing attempts, a 16-yard strike to Bisgard.
McCready ended the night with 5.5 tackles. Konczal and Blke Burnett each had five.
McCready and Bisgard each had one interception in the win. Johnson recovered one fumble.
The Trojans are now 1-1, and will hit the road to take on Highway 1 rival Washington (2-0) this Friday night.
