FAIRFIELD — After losing its last two games and three of the last four, the Fairfield girls basketball team got its swagger back on Friday night.
The Trojans upended Washington in a Southeast Conference showdown, defeating the Demons 64-40 to complete the season sweep.
“This whole week has really been a grind,” said Fairfield assistant coach Josh Allison. “We've had some illnesses and we've been working through some things, so it was really good tonight to see everyone contribute.”
And contribute everyone did. The Trojans had eight girls score en route to victory.
The usual suspects, Delaney and Danielle Breen, led the way with 21 and 13 points respectively, but the rest of the Trojan squad combined for 30.
Sophomore Savannah Hollander paced the rest of the Trojan lineup, scoring 12 points off the bench, more than double her season average. After the game, Hollander talked about growing with a senior-led Trojan team.
“I was definitely scared at first, because I was a sophomore going into varsity,” Hollander said. “My teammates and my coaches were so supportive, and I couldn't have done it without them.”
Brynley Allison added eight points for the Trojans. Ashlyn Lisk and Mallory Lyon had three points apiece, and Kelsey Pacha and Hannah Bergren each had two.
Though the Demons couldn’t put much of a scare into the Trojans, Washington still saw positives, especially early in the game. The Demons stuck within single digits for most of the first half, but Fairfield pushed the lead to 35-21 at the break and pulled away in the third quarter.
“I think defensively we did a good job of slowing them down and taking away their transition, and then we rebounded the ball pretty well,” said Washington head coach Shannon Rugg. “We took a couple of things they do really well and made it more of a half-court game.”
Lauren Hinrichsen led the Demons with nine points. Alex Murphy and Elyse Hunt had eight apiece. Taylor Bartholomew scored five. Maci Williams had four. Kendall Hinrichsen scored three. McKenna Conrad had two, and Kaylin Long finished with one.
Fairfield moved to 5-4 overall and 4-1 in conference play with the win. Washington is now 1-8 overall and 1-4 in league play.
