FAIRFIELD — A tough stretch of the season continued for the Fairfield girls basketball team on Tuesday night, as the Trojans took on Knoxville in the final regular-season game of the season.
The Trojans hung with Knoxville for three of the four quarters, but a rough second period led to a 20-point demise, as Knoxville walked out 62-42 winners.
Knoxville jumped out to a 16-10 lead after the first quarter, but it was the Trojans’ four-point second that had their backs against the wall all night.
The Panthers led the Trojans 30-14 at halftime. Despite Fairfield’s offense picking back up in the third quarter, the Trojans trailed 48-29 after three periods and could never get back into the game.
It was the first win for Knoxville girls basketball over Fairfield since 2008. The Trojans had dominated the last four contests, winning each by double-digits.
Fairfield finished the regular season 2-18. The Trojans will look to pull a huge upset at No. 2 Solon in the first round of the Class 3A Region 2 tournament on Saturday.
