FAIRFIELD — Through one quarter of play on Tuesday night against Oskaloosa, the Fairfield girls basketball team was right in it, but a disaster second period led to the team’s ultimate undoing.
The Trojans scored just two points in the second quarter of a 58-29 loss in their first home game of the year.
Oskaloosa and Fairfield traded blows in the first quarter, as the Trojans were within two points at 11-9 when the first quarter buzzer hit. The Indians, however, battened down the defensive hatches in the second quarter and held Fairfield to just one bucket.
Savannah Hollander led the team with five points in the first half, but nearly had eight when she sent a half-court heave at the buzzer. The ball rattled in and out of the basket, and Oskaloosa enjoyed a 26-11 advantage at the break.
Fairfield struggled to get past Oskaloosa’s defensive pressure in the second quarter, though the Trojans did improve in the second half, scoring 18 points. Fairfield’s defense, however, could never slow down the Indians.
“I challenged them at halftime, and I thought they stepped up to that challenge,” said Fairfield head coach Rebecca Becker. “They're going to go after Savannah, and our other kids had to step up, and they did that.“
Hollander finished the game with 13 points. Grace Lyon put up seven. Briana Steele and Faith Jones each hit four. Elyse Setterstrom scored two, and Maddy Martin finished with one.
Coach Becker said her team still is struggling with youth and inexperience, but that she was glad to see her squad score in the second half.
“It was good for us to be able to handle that kind of pressure,” Becker said. “We didn't, obviously, in the second quarter, but we came out in the second half and did that.”
Fairfield (0-1) will open up Southeast Conference play in Fort Madison on Friday night.
