FAIRFIELD — It was a tough day on the pitch for the Fairfield girls soccer team in Monday nights contest against Burlington.
The Grayhounds couldn’t be stopped as they flooded the Trojans with shots on the way to a 6-0 victory.
Fairfield struggled to get any offense going in the contest, as any offensive run was quickly thwarted by the Grayhounds and turned into a run of their own.
Fairfield head coach Alex Cardenas said that experience played a part in the Grayhounds ability to break free from the Trojans back line.
“Inexperience and having a lot of first year players getting caught watching the ball,” Cardenas said. “That’s something we have to address on the practice field.”
Burlington struck within the first 10 minutes of the game, but Fairfield was able to stay in the game with the stellar play of goalkeeper Kiara Bickham.
“She’s playing her butt off,” Cardenas said. “She had 18 saves on Thursday and not easy saves either. She moving over left and right. For her not playing that position, it’s incredible to see. She’s playing absolutely phenomenal.”
Bickham would finish with a total of 20 saves in the contest.
The Trojans held the Grayhounds scoreless for nearly fifteen minutes before they were able to break free for their second goal of the game coming at the 15:56 mark. Just over three minutes later, 12:17, Burlington struck again with the goal coming off a free kick.
At the half the Trojans trailed, 3-0.
In the second half, Burlington matched its first half totals, adding another three goals. The first came just under two minutes into the half, 38:25. The third was scored around 10 minutes later at the 28:35 mark. The final Grayhound goal came with 2:51 to go in the contest.
Fairfield drops to 0-2 on the season and will face off with Washington on Thursday.
“We will go back to the drawing board and Washington’s got a very solid team,” Cardenas said. “I’v coached a few of those girls before, so I know exactly what they’re facing. It will be a tough one, but luckily we play them twice.”
