WASHINGTON, Iowa ? No. 12 Washington came out of the locker room on fire, nailing six of its first seven shots from beyond the 3-point arc as it jumped out to an 18-0 lead over Fairfield just over three minutes into Friday?s Southeast Conference contest. From there, the Demons rolled to a 60-36 victory over the rival Trojans.
?That was the game right there,? Fairfield head coach Mick Flattery said of Washington?s spurt to open the game.
Washington senior Sydney Greiner opened the game by nailing back-to-back 3-pointers. Senior Regan Enfield drained a 3-pointer from in front of the Fairfield bench, prompting Flattery to call a timeout.
But the break didn?t cool off the Demons. Senior Lauren Vittetoe sank a 3-pointer from the corner, and then Enfield hit another from beyond the arc, forcing Flattery to burn another timeout. Vittetoe hit another 3-pointer seconds later to make it 18-0.
?I?ve said all along that I pity the team that has to face that onslaught when we get it going, because I had three kids step up and nail them right out of the chute,? Washington head coach Phil Long said.
Greiner said the Demons (3-1, 1-0 SEC) were fired up coming out of the locker room, and it showed on the court.
?The last thing that we said in the locker room was we wanted our revenge on them from volleyball,? said Greiner, who went 4-for-8 from beyond the 3-point arc and scored a game-high 21 points. ?So we were trying to embarrass them this time instead of the other way around.?
Enfield made two free throws with 4:30 remaining in the first quarter to give the Demons a 20-0 lead, but neither team scored the rest of the period.
?Our ball rotation was good. Our defensive effort was good. It was 20-0 at the end of the first, and, boy, there wasn?t a lot to talk about when they came to the sidelines,? Long said.
Vittetoe hit a 15-foot jumper early in the second quarter, and then, after Flattery was hit with a technical foul seconds later, Greiner made two free throws to extend Washington?s lead to 24-0.
Finally, nearly three minutes into the second quarter, senior Serena Ward nailed a 3-pointer for Fairfield?s first points of the game. The Trojans had missed their first seven shots from the field and committed 16 turnovers before Ward got the visitors on the scoreboard.
Washington?s full-court press and speedy athletes forced 19 Fairfield turnovers in the first half, and the Demons led 37-12 at the break.
?I know Coach Flattery talked a lot on the pregame show on the radio that they tried to replicate the speed we can play at by putting seven or eight defenders on the floor at one time versus their five, but I?m telling you it?s just a different deal when the five kids we?ve got cover so much ground and do it with discipline,? Long said.
After Fairfield senior Tori Ogden opened the second half with a layup, Washington went on an 11-0 run ? highlighted by a pair of Greiner 3-pointers ? to open up a commanding 34-point lead.
The Demons finished 10-for-22 from 3-point range in the game. Vittetoe went 4-for-8 from beyond the arc and scored 16 points, and Enfield made both of her 3-pointers and added 14 points.
?I?ve got to do a better job of teaching our girls what our scouting report needs to be,? Flattery said.
The Trojans shot 24 percent from the field and committed 27 turnovers in the contest. Ward finished with 10 points, and Ogden had seven.

Trojans rebound vs. Danville
DANVILLE ? The Fairfield girls? basketball team rebounded from Friday?s loss by owning the glass Saturday in Danville.
The Trojans (2-5, 0-2 SEC) grabbed 16 offensive rebounds ? 38 total ? to top Danville 43-33.
Hanna Greiner grabbed 13 of those boards, including six offensive.
?Greiner was terrific on the boards. She was very active,? said Flattery. ?She was jumping upwards to the net getting those rebounds. It was great to see her do that.?
The Trojans entered the final period with a one-point advantage, but they poured in 16 points from there while only allowing six to put away the Bears. In a crucial stretch with a few minutes remaining, junior Erin Thompson hit four consecutive free throws to stretch the Trojans? lead from five to nine points.
The win gave the Trojans? two victories in the week after beating Albia Tuesday.
?Great win on the road ? accomplished one of our main goals for the week in having a winning record for the week,? said Flattery. ?It was good to see.?
