Fairfield girls tame Hounds, Bulldogs

FAIRFIELD — It has been a hot start to the season for the Fairfield girls tennis team, and that was reflected on Tuesday when the Trojans put a hurting on both Burlington and Ottumwa.

Fairfield hosted both teams in a double-dual. In the first game, the Trojans bumped Burlington 7-2/ They followed that up with an 8-1 defeat of Ottumwa.

Against Burlington, Fairfield took five of six singles matches. This included a sweep in the top four games.

No. 1 player Katrina Paton won her match 8-3. Penelope Higdon took the No. 2 match 8-2. No. 3 Abby Schaefer won 8-6, and No. 4 Lauren Kramer triumphed 8-2.

The Trojan girls picked up an 8-2 win from No. 6 Olivia Jones. The only singles loss was by No. 5 Sydney Wells, who fell 8-5.

In doubles, Paton and Schaefer beat Burlington’s No. 1 team 8-2. The No. 2 team of Higdon of Kramer won 8-6, and the duo of Wells and Jones lost 8-3 in the No. 3 game.

The Trojans swept Ottumwa in singles. Paton won 8-3. Higdon took her game 8-4. Schaefer won 8-4. Kraemer triumphed 8-5. Wells picked up an 8-6 win, and Jones won 8-0.

The Trojans went 2-1 in doubles. Paton and Schaefer won the No. 1 match, 8-5, and Wells and Jones prevailed in the No. 3 match, 8-3. The No. 2 team of Higdon and Kraemer fell, 8-6.
