MOUNT VERNON — The Fairfield girls tennis team was joined by three others in the regional semifinals at Coe College on Tuesday. The Trojans pulled out the win of the day, but ended up falling one match later.
Fairfield knocked off Central Dewitt 5-4 in a semifinal thriller, inching one step closer to the first round of the state tournament. The Trojans couldn’t get it done, however, against a stacked Xavier squad.
The Trojans and Sabres were all knotted up at three wins apiece after singles, meaning it would all come down to the doubles matches, and Fairfield needed two to move on.
The No. 1 doubles team of Poojita Mukadam and Natalie Steele came through in a big way, knocking off Central Dewitt’s best team 6-0, 6-0.
Unfortunately for the Trojans, the No. 2 team of Emma Wendland and Sriya Yammanur couldn’t get it done, falling 6-4, 6-3, meaning Fairfield needed a win at No. 3.
In the No. 3 doubles match, Mareyn Duncan and Faith Jones prevailed 6-4, 6-1 to send the Trojans through.
On the other side of the bracket, top-seeded Xavier had just blanked Notre Dame 5-0. The Saints hadn’t lost a match in the entire team tournament, and they continued that trend against the Trojans.
Fairfield lost five singles matches against Xavier to knock the Trojans out of the tournament. That placed Fairfield at 16-2 to finish out the season.
The Trojans still have hope in the state singles tournament next week. Mukadam and Steele are both competing.
