Fairfield, Highland, Cardinal out of softball tournament
IOWA CITY — A two-out walk-off wild pitch ended the season for the Cardinal Comets, who lost their Class 2A Region 7 softball final 5-4 in the 11th inning Tuesday night. Iowa City Regina will be headed to the state tournament.
After going down 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Cardinal senior Alexia McClure led the fifth inning off with a double and scored on Caitlyn Reber's RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
In the sixth, Cardinal loaded the bases and scored three runs. Nicoa McClure sent one home on a sacrifice fly, and with two outs, Madison Diveley tripled to left to make it 4-1.
Iowa City Regina stormed back to tie the game with a three-run seventh inning and the Regals walked off in the 11th when a two-out pitch snuck to the backstop, allowing Regina to score.
Trojans match hits, don’t match score
CARLISLE — Last year’s second place Class 4A softball team, Carlisle has a chance to grab that first place trophy after Tuesday’s 8-0 defeat of Fairfield.
The Trojans were denied a chance to return to the state tournament.
Each team had three hits, but the Trojans received two bases on balls while Fairfield pitcher Coty Engle issued nine walks.
Hannah Simpson, Jenna Norris and Emmersyn Manly had a hit apiece for Fairfield.
Highland edged
LISBON — Highland lost its regional final 8-6 in a road game at No. 3 Lisbon.
Highland battled back from an early 3-0 deficit and led 5-3 after scoring one in the third and four in the fourth.
Lisbon scored three in the fourth to re-take the lead at 6-5. Highland tied it at 6-6 in the fifth, but Lisbon scored one in the bottom of the fifth and one more in the sixth to pull away and earn a Class 1A tournament trip.
Tigers crush Bears
NEW LONDON — The New London Tigers won their postseason baseball game over Danville 11-1.
