FORT MADISON — The first Southeast Conference meeting of the year between Fairfield and Fort Madison ended in some major fireworks, but the excitement didn't quite carry over into Friday night's showdown at the Hound Dome.
Fairfield lost both league matchups against the hosting Bloodhounds. The girls' team fell 57-29, while the boys' team dropped its game 70-54.
The Trojan girls had a lot to be excited about early in the game. Fairfield, coming into the game winless, put an early scare into the co-SEC leaders, as the Trojans took an 8-4 lead into the second quarter.
Fort Madison grabbed the lead in the second period, but it was only 21-13 at halftime. The Bloodhounds, however, pulled away with a dominant second half.
Faith Jones scored 11 points for the Trojans in defeat. Emma Metcalf finished with nine points. Grace Lyon had five. Vanessa Kessel and Haleigh Strickland each put up two, and Natalie Steele pulled down a team-leading seven rebounds.
The Trojan boys lost their hold on a share of first place after a tough road loss. Fort Madison led 14-9 after one quarter, 33-22 at halftime and 50-38 after three quarters, as Fairfield was unable to win any quarter on the night.
It was Fairfield's first loss of 2025. The Trojans had been streaking into the new year with wins over Burlington, Centerville, Mt. Pleasant and Pekin.
The Fairfield girls are now 0-14 overall and 0-6 in conference play. The Trojan boys are 5-7 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
