ALBIA ? Offense was at a premium Monday during Fairfield JV football?s matchup against Albia, yet it all came down to a defensive stop on a two-point conversion.
Tied 42-all in overtime, the Trojans scored first and converted a two-point attempt to take a 50-42 lead. The Blue Demons answered right back with a touchdown of their own, but Fairfield?s defense came up with the stop on the two-point play to seal the 50-48 victory.
Not bad for a season opener.
?Our players hung in there ? even when down by 14 points in the first quarter,? said Fairfield coach Brad Repp. ?I was very impressed by the way we kept our composure going into the overtime period. They played with a confidence. They knew they were going to score.?
Sophomore Nick Jackson had an outstanding day from the backfield, picking up 274 yards on the ground and scoring four touchdowns.
Jordan Whitney and Tanner Deao split quarterback duties, with both throwing for multiple touchdowns. Chet Vogt caught one of those touchdowns, a 75-yard reception, and Keith Burns hauled in a 12-yard touchdown catch. Narendra Martin had a 15-yard touchdown reception and hauled in two catches on two-point conversion attempts.
Defensively, Alex Christensen was the top tackler on the day with 12 stops. Riley Hammel and Colton Stacy had eight and six tackles, respectively. Mason Tvrs and Bryce Lunsford each sacked the quarterback on Albia?s final drive of regulation.
The Trojans have a little more than a week off before visiting Chariton on Sept. 4.
