FAIRFIELD — Everything has been clicking as of late for the Fairfield boys basketball team. With the postseason on the horizon, the Trojans have chosen the right time to get hot.
With a win over West Burlington the night before, the most recent game added to the win column came on Tuesday night, a 68-39 victory over Chariton.
Fairfield held a commanding lead after the first half and capped it off with an even better second to down the Chargers.
“They’re starting to believe in everything we’ve been working on,” Fairfield head coach Mick Flattery said. “It’s the ol' fruits of your labor, they’re seeing it now. Different guys are stepping up scoring, which we knew would happen. They just had to keep the faith.”
Fairfield held just a two-point lead, 10-8, at the midway point of the first quarter. The Trojans quickly made it a 17-8 game by the end of the quarter with a 7-0 run.
Dominance continued into the second.
Fairfield started the quarter with a 10-2 run, building a 17 point lead, 27-10. The Chargers gained some ground at the end of the quarter cutting the lead to 13, 32-19, heading into the locker room.
In the third, Fairfield didn’t let up. The Trojans outscored Chariton 15-9, sending them into the fourth with a 47-28 lead.
The game was all but sealed following the dominant third, but the Trojans were not done as they put together their best scoring quarter in the fourth, sending Chariton home with a loss. Fairfield won the fourth 21-11.
Although the Trojan’s are on a hot streak, there’s still work to be done.
“We’re heading in the direction of our best basketball,” Fairfield’s Max Weaton said. “I would say we’re not quite there yet. A lot of flaws still showing. A little too many turnovers and little mistakes. I think we will clean those up over the next few days.”
Max Weaton tallied yet another double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. JJ Lane finished with 13 points. Joey Valdez had 12 points. Tate Allen added seven. Sam Weaton chipped in six points. Hunter Cecchini had five. Evan Haines had four. Myles McEntee scored two.
Fairfield improves to 8-10 overall and currently sits at 2-7 in the Southeast Conference. The Trojans will face off with Mt. Pleasant on Friday for a shot at fourth in the conference.
