BURLINGTON - Despite having just one bowling team instead of two, Washington put two brothers on the All-Conference First Team with their performances Monday at the Southeast Conference meet. Fairfield placed two on the boys first team and McKayla Taylor made the girls elite squad. Mt. Pleasant's Eden Svoboda was a first teamer by bettering her previous best her personal record.
'I'm excited because I broke my personal record and my high series in the same game,” Svoboda said. She had a 357 series and a 192 game. 'I was able to do it because my coach kept me relaxed and made it an overall great day.”
McKayla Taylor, Chance Swan and Wyatt Baker were the Trojans first teamers.
'They both had a goal to make the top 12 and to get in to the top six is a great reward for them,” Fairfield assistant coach Bryan Marley said of the boys.
'I feel like I struggled a little bit and definitely have some room to improve,” Swan said. 'But I'm not disappointed in my performance.”
'I feel like I got good ball reaction on the right lane, but the left lane wasn't hooking as much,” Baker said.
Having the ball react differently on different lanes is just a part of a bowler's experience.
Taylor's series total of 323 was a nice cap to a season of improvement.
'I was really relaxed and it helped to be bowling with my sister,” Taylor said. 'My team has won a lot of meets and that means a lot to me.”
Washington's Ethan Zieglowsky equaled last year's finish, taking second after securing third his freshman year. Caleb Zieglowsky nearly equaled his older brother's freshman finish placing fourth.
Ethan Zieglowsky was focused on his mechanics and he started with six consecutive strikes, then added three more to post a 268, the best game of the tournament.
'I was hitting that third arrow all day long,” he said. 'To do the same thing over and over again is what leads to success.” He did have four open frames consecutively in the second game. 'I was having trouble with the feeling in my finger holes.”
His younger brother doesn't bother with the thumb hole when he bowls.
”It felt great to finish this high and it was because I was consistent,” Caleb Zieglowsky said, who uses both hands to spin the ball as much as possible, increasing the hook, the revolutions and the pin action.
The brothers were motivated by a city tournament Saturday when Caleb Zieglowsky rolled a 267 to his older brother's 188.
'Mechanics for me are so important,” said Caleb Zieglowsky.
The Washington and Fairfield teams have both lost the use of the home alley. The Trojans have traveled to Ottumwa for home meets while Washington just hasn't had any.
'Having to go to Ottumwa has been a big change but my team has just been rolling with the changes and that has helped make us a better team and able to overcome a lot of things,” Taylor said.
