FAIRFIELD - The Fairfield - Mt. Pleasant baseball rivalry was renewed for just a couple of innings before lightning and rain forced the Southeast Conference doubleheader to postpone. When the weather came, Fairfield was leading 6-3 with Mt. Pleasant threatening in the top of the third.
Mt. Pleasant struck first when Jack Johnson knocked in two with a two-out double. The Panthers would push three across in the first at bat. Fairfield loaded the bases in the bottom half but scored just one, and Mt. Pleasant held a 3-1 lead after one frame.
After a scoreless Panther second, the Trojans put up five in the bottom of the second. Fairfield was patient at the plate, and the Panther pitching staff had trouble finding the strike zone, allowing walk after walk.
Mt. Pleasant had runners on second and third with two outs when the game was suspended. A makeup date hasn’t been announced.
Nate Smithburg is currently in line to be the winning pitcher for the Trojans if Mt. Pleasant can’t catch up. He started the game and pitched both innings.
Cooper Keldgord started the game on the mound for Mt. Pleasant. Zerek Venghaus came in to pitch in relief in the second inning.
The Fairfield boys still sit at 7-12 overall and 5-7 in SEC play. Mt. Pleasant is 5-15 overall and 3-9 in the conference.
