FAIRFIELD — The bats weren’t rattling as much as planned in the Fairfield baseball team’s season opener on Monday night. The Trojans struggled to hit the ball against visiting Grinnell, losing their first game, 10-0.
Grinnell started the game off with a bang, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Trojan starter Connor Lyons settled down after that, but Fairfield’s offense could never get the runs back.
Grinnell added one more run in the fourth, one in the fifth and four in the sixth. The game was ended after a scoreless Fairfield six, due to the 10-run mercy rule.
The Trojans had just two hits all night long. Tate Allen went 1-for-2 with a single, and Cason Miller was 1-for-3 with a single as well.
Lyons was tagged with the loss on the day, giving up five runs (two earned) on three hits and one walk, while striking out eight batters over four innings. Tallon Bates and Chandler Pumphrey each saw time on the mound as well.
The Trojans fell to 0-1 to start the year. Fairfield plays Oskaloosa on Tuesday night. As of press time, that game has not finished.
