FAIRFIELD - After four Fairfield home football games last season, the Trojans will have five games this season in a bid to improve on 2018's recod of 4-5.
The Trojans won their first game in 2018, but lost the next two, both on the road. Clear Creek-Amana, which had a record of 8-2 last season, pitched a 29-0 shutout and Oskaloosa (8-2) scored a 28-14 triumph. Both Oskaloosa and Clear Creek-Amana made the playoffs last season.
A high-scoring 61-44 win over Grinnell (3-6) at home preceded the district opener, a home loss to Mt. Pleasant (5-4), 35-17.
The Trojans played in Class 3A District 6 where they went 2-3.
The opponents out of and in the district are the same this year, but each game will be played opposite of last year's home games.
Last year's season opener was a 28-6 win over Knoxville (3-6) and the Trojans will play there to start 2019.
Homecoming will be Oct. 4 when Ft. Madison comes to town.
The Trojans won 42-14 over the Bloodhounds (3-6) last year and followed that with a 19-6 home win over Keokuk (1-8).
The next game was a 24-22 barnburner loss at Washington (6-3).
Solon, which was the only playoff team from the district, came to town and ended the Trojans' season with a 57-14 win. Solon (9-1) lost in the first round of the playoffs.
Fairfield threw the ball just 58 times last season, lowest in the district. Solon and Washington both threw 101 passes while Ft. Madison and Mt. Pleasant both threw 157. Keokuk threw 76.
The Trojans led the distrcit in rushing attempts (367) and yards (1700). The Trojans were last in causing turnovers with 13 total.
The Trojans were the only team in the district to return a punt for a touchdown when Carter Ferrel accomplished that feat at Ft. Madison.
