FAIRFIELD — The Trojan boys had a low experience Thursday in defeating three other teams on the golf course. Fairfield posted its best score since a 153 in 2014 at Williamsburg as it took just 158 strokes to win. Washington nipped Mt. Pleasant 172-173 for second and New London had 182,
Max Weaton’s 38 consisted of a birdie and five pars while Fairfield teammate Nate Smithburg matched the birdie with four pars for his 38. Evan Haines (40) and Brad Smithburg (42) sank a birdie each.
Fairfield has a 12-1 record.
Mid-Prairie Invitational
Mid-Prairie hosted a 10-team girls golf meet at the Kalona Golf Course and finished eighth with a team score of 444. Iowa City Liberty was the winner with a score of 361.
Madelyn Bender was team medalist for Mid-Prairie with an 18-hole score of 99, a personal best and eighth overall. Other Golden Hawks scores were Alexa Huber at 111, Madi Davidson with 115, Elliott Debler 119, Gabi Robertson 122 and Madison Witthoft 145.
"We set new 9-hole team marks with a 223 on the front and then coming back with 221 and 9-hole bests by Bender, Huber, Debler and Witthoft,“ Mid-Prairie coach Tracy McArtor said. "It just shows how hard the kids have been working.”
Eagle gets eagle
BELLE PLAINE — Luke Hammen is an Eagle and shot an eagle, using golf clubs not a gun. Keota won a road boys golf meet when Belle Plaine had 215 and the Eagles scored a 180 behind Hammen’s medalist score of 40.
Hammen scored a 3 on the par-5 fifth hole. No other player even parred it. Belle Plaine’s best, Gavin Ward, bogeyed it on his way to a 47. Meet runner-up was Keota’s Max Johnson, who had a triple bogey on it but posted a 46. Drew Sieren and Sawyer Stout each carded a 47 for the Eagles.
