KNOXVILLE — Through three weeks of the season, the Fairfield football team had shown plenty of promise, but hadn’t put everything together. On Friday night, that finally changed.
Fairfield was the best team on all sides of the ball in its trip to Knoxville for a Week 4 non-district showdown. The Trojans got in the winner’s column with a 55-16 blowout victory.
One week after falling in their own Homecoming game, the Trojans blasted the Panthers all night on Knoxville’s Homecoming. Fairfield never trailed in the victory.
The scoring opened up with just under five minutes remaining in the first quarter when quarterback Voss Richardson scampered around the left side for an 11-yard touchdown run. The Trojans converted on the two-point conversion, and the route was on.
Knoxville responded with a field goal on its next drive, but the Trojans darted through the Panther run defense for a long score when Zandrik Allison rushed for a 55-yard touchdown on the second play of the second quarter to make it 14-3.
Then came the Trojans first takeaway of the entire season, as Voss Richardson came down with a ball thrown just short of the end zone. Richardson took the first Fairfield pick of the year all the way back to the house for a 97-yard pick-six.
Fairfield led the game 36-3 at halftime, and ran that score up to 43-3 with an early touchdown in the third quarter, which started the running clock.
The Trojans would lead the game 43-10 after the third quarter, and score twice more in the final period.
The Trojans would run for 408 yards and five touchdowns on the game. Allison led the charge, rushing for 171 yards and two scores.
Ethan Bisgard had 144 yards on the ground and two scores, including an 80-yard dash to the end zone. Richardson finished with 59 yards and one touchdown rushing, and completed two passes, both for touchdowns to Allison, who racked up 49 receiving yards to go over 200 all-purpose.
Tucker Robertson led the defense with seven tackles in the win. Along with Richardson’s pick six, Fairfield had one more takeaway, an interception by Brady Wigle that went 37 yards the other way.
Fairfield is now 1-3 on the year. The Trojans will be hosting the district favorite Solon in this Friday’s district opener. Solon will likely be ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 when the new Gazette rankings come out later this week.
