Fortune finally favored Fairfield in a one-score game.
Fairfield came up painstakingly short against Centerville and Mediapolis in weeks tow and three. The Trojans lost both games by a combined 14 points.
It wouldn’t be the same case in Week 7, as Fairfield fought off a stingy Keokuk side 38-30 at home. The Trojans picked up their second win a row to improve to a 2-2 mark in Class 3A District 4 play.
A 63-yard touchdown run by Ethan Bisgard and a successful two-point try with just over 90 seconds remaining in the third quarter gave Farifield a 38-22 cushion. Keokuk scored on the second play of the fourth quarter and made it a one-score game with a two-point conversion of its own.
Fairfield responded as well as it could have without finding the end zone on its ensuing drive. The Trojans took over seven minutes off the clock, and the drive ended with an interception at the Fairfield 1-yard line, which forced Keokuk to go 99 yards with 3:45 remaining.
It wasn’t an impossible situation. The Chiefs had all three timeouts and even advanced into Fairfield territory. That’s where the drive stalled, however, as Jadyn Burton threw four straight incompletions from the Trojans’ 48-yard line, and turned the ball over on downs with 2:45 to play. Fairfield gained two first downs and was able to run out the rest of the clock.
Bisgard finished an outstanding game with 232 of Fairfield’s 412 yards on the ground. He did his damage on just 11 carries for an average of 21.1 yards.
The junior found the end zone three times on the ground and also caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from Voss Richardson in the dying seconds of the first half to give Fairfield a 22-8 lead at the break. Bisgard also led Fairfield on defense with 11 tackles.
Zandrik Allison added 98 yards rushing and a touchdown on the ground. Sophomore Brady Wigle chipped in 56 yards on 10 carries.
Richardson went 3 of 8 on pass attempts for 48 yards one touchdown and three interceptions. The junior did make a key contribution on defense, when he forced a fumble in the second quarter that was recovered by Nolan Smith.
Fairfield finishes the regular season with a crucial game against rivals Mount Pleasant. The two teams will square off at 7:30 p.m. at Fairfield High School.
