The Fairfield boys? soccer team pulled out a win in penalty kicks vs. Mount Pleasant in Southeast Conference action Thursday.
Roan Bachar and Max Sloat both converted on their kicks to lead the Trojans to a 5-3 win at home. Aidan Bachar made three saves in the shootout to preserve the victory.
After losing two straight games last week, Fairfield has turned the tables to win two in a row. Fairfield also beat Fort Madison 3-1 on Tuesday.
The Trojans fell behind early Thursday when Mount Pleasant?s Michael Schmitz scored in the first 50 seconds. Bo Vitale added another goal for Mount Pleasant, and the Panthers took a 2-0 lead at the 14-minute mark.
?We started the game very slow and lacking concentration,? said Fairfield head coach Felisto Guezimane. ?It?s completely unacceptable that we conceded a goal in the first few seconds of the game for the third time.?
Kendall Mickels put the Trojans on the scoreboard at the 15-minute mark, and Sloat tied the game at 2-all at the 25-minute mark. Both teams scored once more in the half, with Darrin Dimmitt scoring for Fairfield off Roan Bachar?s second assist of the day.
Though both teams scored a game?s worth in the first half, neither could find the back of the net in the second period or in a pair of 10-minute overtime periods.
It was the play of senior goalie Aidan Bachar, then, that made the biggest impact in the victory.
?He came out really big for us tonight and his big saves in the overtime and penalty kicks sealed the victory for us,? said Guezimane. ?He was the player of the game.?
Bachar finished with 14 saves.
Fairfield lost the JV contest 3-0.
Guezimane looks for a better team effort with the Trojans (8-3, 5-1) headed to the Iowa Mennonite School Tournament on Saturday.
?We really have to tighten things up in the back and stay focused. We seem more focused on away games,? Guezimane added.
Trojan girls drop contest
MOUNT PLEASANT ? The Fairfield girls? soccer team was kept off the scoreboard in a 1-0 loss to Mount Pleasant Thursday.
The Trojans? record now sits at 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the Southeast Conference.
In JV action, the Trojans continued their winning ways with a 3-1 victory.
Alina Winters and Furi Sloan nailed the first two goals for Fairfield. Alyssa Murphy tallied the last score off a penalty kick. Sloan and Murphy tallied one assist apiece.
The Fairfield JV team is 5-1-1 overall.
Next up for the Fairfield girls is a home matchup vs. Mid-Prairie Tuesday.
