FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield softball team had its hands full when defending Southeast Conference champion Burlington came into town on Monday night, but the Trojans did make the Grayhounds sweat in Game 2.
After No. 11 (4A) Burlington cruised through the opening game with a 13-0 blowout, the Trojans played the Grayhounds to a 2-1 game in the second contest.
Fairfield was no-hit in Game 1, as Burlington senior Saydee Plummer struck out 10 batters in a five inning contest.
“We knew that Burlington's number one pitcher was one of the best in the state,” said Fairfield head coach Bob Bradfield. “I knew we were going to have trouble scoring off of her.”
The Trojans had more trouble hitting in Game 2, but Fairfield did have its chances. After squandering a bases-loaded situation earlier in the game, Fairfield did cut the Grayhound lead in half when Lilly Bergren scored the Trojans’ only run of the night in the bottom of the fifth.
The Trojans were kept in the game by pitching and defense. Leah Helmick gave up just two earned runs on six hits and five walks against a talented Grayhound lineup.
Unfortunately for Fairfield, the team would get no-hit again, this time by a combination of Kylee Hill and Plummer. Plummer had to come in to relieve Hill for the sixth and seventh, and struck out five batters in two frames.
The Trojans drew seven walks off of Hill. Olivia Hollander, Vanessa Kessel and Maddy Martin drew two each.
“It was a 2-1 game, and we had our chances,” Bradfield said. “We just couldn't quite get a hit at those times.”
Fairfield (2-8, 0-5) will hit the road to play Burlington (6-0, 5-0) on Thursday night.
