FAIRFIELD — It just wasn’t Fairfield’s night on Thursday as the Trojans took on No. 9 (4A) Burlington in Southeast Conference play. The Trojans never got anything going in a 6-0 loss.
Burlington’s Saydee Plummer did a good job of keeping Fairfield off the bases. The Trojans collected just two hits in the game against the Grayhound pitcher.
“The Burlington pitcher just sort of overpowered us,” said Fairfield head coach Bob Bradfield. “We were back on our heels at the plate and just never got anything going.”
Fairfield’s Coty Engle battled with Plummer all game long, as the two traded shutout innings through three frames. Burlington scored two runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth to break the tie.
Burlington’s big swing came when eighth-grader Kylee Hill blasted a two-run home run in the fifth. It was her ninth home run in 10 games.
“It's tough, obviously,” Bradfield said. She's just a good hitter.“
Offensively, Fairfield had one extra-base hit, a double by Olivia Hollander, who finished 1-for-2. Faith Jones was 1-for-2 with a single.
Engle gave up six earned runs over seven innings of work. She allowed nine hits and two walks, while striking out seven batters.
Fairfield fell in all three games against Burlington after sweeping Fort Madison in the first SEC series of the season. The Trojans are now 3-3 in league play, with two games against Washington (5-1) coming up on Monday.
