FAIRFIELD — Fairfield softball kicked off Southeast Conference play just how it would’ve liked on Tuesday night.
In a doubleheader against the Bloodhounds of Fort Madison, the Trojans were winners 3-1 in game one and 9-5 in the second.
Both teams struggled to bring in runs through the opening two frames as defense held strong.
An inning later though, the Fairfield got onto the board with an RBI from designated hitter Claire Thompson.
Both squads went scoreless through the fourth and an inning later the games deciding runs were scored.
Fairfield opening the inning with two quick outs as Trojan pitcher Coty Engle sat down her first opponent of the frame and forced a fly out in the next at-bat.
However, that wouldn’t stop the Bloodhounds from bringing the tying run across home plate.
Fort Madison was able to knot the game at 1-1 after a Trojan error and a wild pitch that put a runner at second.
The Bloodhounds followed up with an RBI single to tie it up.
Fairfield wasted no time answering back.
In the first two at-bats in the bottom half of the frame, Emmelia Miller and Engle both delivered with a pair of singles.
Savannah Hollander got a piece of the ball in the next at-bat. An error by the Bloodhounds not only gave Hollander a free spot on base, but brought Miller home to make it 2-1.
After a pair of outs, a wild pitch gave the Trojans their third run of the game as Engle crossed home plate.
Neither team would score again as Engle sat down the final two batters in the top of the seventh for the win.
Lilly Bergren and Peyton McCabe each went 1-for-3 with a double.
Engle also went 1-for-3. Miller finished 1-for-2 and Thompson finished with one RBI.
Engle threw a complete game allowing one unearned run on four hits, one walk and 10 strikeouts.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Fort Madison opened up with a single run and that’s as long as they would lead.
Fairfield came back with two runs in the bottom of the opening frame.
The game stayed at 2-1 through the second and third, but the Trojans created some separation with a three run fourth, making it 5-1.
Fort Madison bounced back with three runs of its own in the top of the fifth to cut the game to one, 5-4, but that’s as close as they would come.
The Trojans went on to bring a game high four runs home in the bottom half of the inning pushing their advantage to 9-4.
An inning later Fort Madison another run, but that proved to be the final run of the game.
Savannah Hollander went 1-for-4 with three RBIs. Coty Engle finished 2-for-2, Laney Norris went 2-for-4, Peyton McCabe ended 1-for-3 and Lilly Bergren finished 1-for-4 with a double.
In the circle, Laney Norris notched the win going 4.2 innings, while giving up four runs (two earned) on 10 hits, one walk and three strikeouts.
Engle closed the game in 2.1 innings, giving up two hits, one none earned run, four walks and four strikeouts.
With the pair of wins, the Trojans improve to 3-2 on the season and 2-0 in SEC play.
They will take on Fort Madison once again on Friday on the road.
