FAIRFIELD — Fairfield and Keokuk softball met for the final time on Thursday to decide the regular season winner.
The Trojans and Chiefs split there first two meetings of the season in a doubleheader on Monday, June 24.
Just three days later, the two were at it again, but it was the Chiefs who were victorious 6-3.
It was a tightly contested game through three innings, with the Trojans leading after the first, but they would never score again as the Chiefs shut them out in six straight innings.
Keokuk jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, but Fairfield answered.
Savannah Hollander was walked to kick off the bottom of the first inning, followed by a pair of singles from Faith Jones and Olivia Hollander.
Olivia Hollander’s single was enough to get Savannah Hollander home, putting the Trojans on the board.
In the next at-bat, Laney Norris drilled an RBI double to score Jones and tie the game at 2-2. The Trojans weren’t quite done yet. Leah Helmick finished off the Trojans three run first inning with a single to score Hollander.
To the Trojans dismay, they would never score again.
Meanwhile, Keokuk took back the lead an inning later. The Chiefs scored two more in the second as well as one each in the third and seventh to win it.
The Trojans finished with just four hits in the loss. Norris pitched a complete game, giving up 11 hits, six runs (five earned) with two strikeouts.
