FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield softball team finally got on the board in the Southeast Conference race on Monday night.
The Trojans took down rival Mt. Pleasant twice on the day, beating the Panthers 12-0 in Game 1 and 14-2 in Game 2.
“No matter who we're playing, it's nice to win,” said Fairfield head coach Bob Bradfield. “This was sort of a battle, because both of our records are similar, but we came out, hit the ball and took advantage of stuff Mt. Pleasant had trouble with.”
Fairfield’s Laney Norris had a fantastic outing in Game 1, shutting the Panthers down all game long, earning her first SEC win of the yea rin the circle.
Fairfield scored two runs in the first inning, give in the second, one in the third and four in the fourth to end the game via the 12-run mercy rule.
Mt. Pleasant’s Myah Starr picked up the loss in the circle.
In Game 2, Mt. Pleasant went on top early when Kynlee White knocked in Emma Starr in the first inning, but the Trojans came back to score four in the bottom of the frame and add one in the second to go up 5-2.
Mt. Pleasant cut the lead down to 5-3, and Mt. Pleasant had the game close until the bottom of the fourth, when the Trojans would rattle off nine runs to reach another 12-run rule.
Fairfield’s Leah Helmick picked up the win in the circle in Game 2. Elyse Setterstrom went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, including the game-winner.
“Our whole team really communicated well,” said Setterstrom. “We just wanted to come out on top of Mt. Pleasant. It's just nice to see it all come together.”
Mt. Pleasant’s Ty Alter and Chaley Cook each saw time in the circle.
The Trojans (5-15, 2-8) will visit the Panthers (2-17, 1-9) on Thursday night.
