ALBIA — Not a lot went right for the Fairfield softball team in the Class 3A Region 3 quarterfinal softball game on Thursday night.
The Trojans went into Albia looking for a road upset, and it looked like that could be in the cards after one inning, but the Blue Demons flexed their muscle in a big way in the second inning.
Capitalizing on a couple of Trojan miscues defensively, Albia put up a ridiculous 15 runs in the bottom of the second inning, turning what was a 0-0 tie into a blowout loss for visiting Fairfield.
“You've got to give Albia credit,” said Fairfield head coach Bob Bradfield. “They just kept hitting the ball.”
Albia catcher Sydney Hoskins was particularly cruel to the Trojans. She sent two home runs into center and left-center field, bringing five runs in total, including a three-run shot off the scoreboard.
In all, Albia collected 11 hits in the second frame. Only nine of those 15 runs, however, were earned.
“We gave them some extra chances,” Bradfield said. “We didn't help ourselves, obviously.”
Fairfield needed four runs in the third to even keep the game going, but the Trojans stranded one runner on and couldn’t get anybody to the plate.
Laney Norris took the loss in the circle, giving up 12 runs (nine earned) over 2.1 innings. Leah Helmick gave up three over two-thirds of a frame.
The Trojans had just two base runners. Savannah Hollander reached on an error in the first at-bat of the game, and Emmelia Miller had the team’s lone hit in the third inning.
Fairfield ended the season 10-26. Albia was knocked out of the regional tournament by Chariton, by the score of 6-4, two nights later.
