Fairfield softball picks up pair of wins
Trojans defeat Van Buren County and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont

Fairfield softball finished its week with a 2-1 record. The Trojans defeated Van Buren County on Wednesday and followed up with a split against Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in a doubleheader.
The Trojans topped VBC 7-5, while winning 13-8 and losing 6-4 to E-B-F.
Fairfield fell behind early against VBC. The Warriors scored two runs in the first inning. Those remained unanswered until the Trojans scored a pair of their own in the third.
VBC kept the pressure on, retaking the lead in the fourth will a single run, but the top of the fifth inning ended up being the difference.
The Trojans rattled off five runs in the top of the frame to take a commanding 7-3 lead. The Warriors notched one themselves in the bottom of the fifth, but they finished the game with just one additional run as Fairfield escaped with the win.
Leah Helmick finisehd the win 4-for-4 for the Trojans. She had two RBIs as well. Laney Norris had two hits and two RBIs as well. Emmelia Miller finished with one RBI.
For VBC, Alicia Cumberland and Ashlynn Huff both had two hits. Cumberland finished with a team high two RBIs. Callie Kracht and Addison Brauns both had RBIs as well.
In the win over E-B-F, neither team had trouble scoring early on.
Fairfield scored four runs in the first two innings, but the Rockets went on to score eight in the first four frames.
That didn’t stop the Trojans. Fairfield brough a game high six runs home in the fifth inning to flip the game in its favor, 10-8. They weren’t done there as three more runs in the sixth made it a 13-8 game.
Fairfield finished the game on a 9-0 run.
Leah Helmick finished with four RBIs for the Trojans on two hits. Lilly Bergren and Faith Jones each had two hits. Jones along with Vanessa Kessel and Maddy Martin had one RBI.
In the loss to the Rockets, the Trojans went scoreless through the first four innings, but heading into the fifth E-B-F led just 2-0.
Fairfield knotted the game with a pair in the bottom of the fifth. Both teams scored two in the sixth inning to keep it even, but two runs by the Rockets in the seventh were enough to get the job done.
Lilly Bergren, Faith Jones and Emmelia Miller each had RBIs for Fairfield. Bergren finished with two hits, while Jones, Leah Helmick, Emma Septer and Maddy Martin all had one.
