FAIRFIELD — Fairfield’s postseason run came to an end Thursday night with a 6-4 loss to Davis County in the Class 3A Region 8 semifinal.
The Trojans (20-16) led from the third to fifth innings, but a late surge from the Mustangs secured the win.
Davis County (17-10) struck early with two runs on four hits in the first inning. Fairfield responded immediately, tying the game on a two-run homer by Leah Helmick following a bunt single from Olivia Hollander.
After a back-and-forth start, Laney Norris gave Fairfield a 4-3 lead in the third with a clutch two-run single. But the Trojans’ offense stalled from there, failing to record another hit for the remainder of the game.
“Davis County hit the ball really well,” Fairfield head coach Bob Bradfield said. “You have to give them credit. We didn’t play real clean defense. If we played really good defense, we probably win four to three.”
The Mustangs tied the game in the sixth on a Fairfield error and pulled ahead on a sacrifice fly. An insurance run in the seventh sealed the deal, while Fairfield went quietly in the final two innings, going three up, three down in both frames.
Laney Norris led the Trojans, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Leah Helmick finsiehd with a hit and two RBIs. Olivia Hollander and Emma Septer both had a hit as well.
In the circle, Leah Helmick threw a complete game, giving up 11 hits, six runs (four earned) with two strikeouts.
“I have to give our girls a lot of credit that we doubled our win total,” Bradfield said. “The girls came back and got better. The girls are just all good kids too.”
