The Fairfield High School basketball teams each played nonconference games Monday with the girls team team edging Martensdale St. Mary's 59-54 on the road and the boys falling at home 76-63 to Danville.
'It was a good win for us, really good win on a long road trip during a school night” FHS girls coach Jeff Miller said. 'Danielle Breen, Shay Drish and Destiny Gridley all drove the basketball to the hoop and got fouled and made free throws in clutch situations.”
The Trojan girls used 22 points on 7-of-14 field goal shooting and 7-of-9 free throws by Drish to rally from deficits of 19-17 in the first quarter, 34-28 at halftime and 44-42 after the third.
'We started out slow and were down by two to six points most of the game,” Miller said. 'But in the final few minutes the girls really came together as a team and did a great job of shutting down their offense and making plays on our end.”
Fairfield shot 15-of-22 from the free throw line.
Drish added six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Gridley added 12 points. Danielle Breen put up nine points and took down six rebounds. Hannah Simpson and Delaney Breen tallied six points apiece.
The female Trojans are 7-4 and return to Southeast Conference play with a game at Burlington Friday.
Fairfield's boys made 13 3-pointers and out-rebounded the home team 30-26 but were 10-for-21 on free throws and turned the ball over 29 times.
Elan Ledger drained six 3-pointers on his way to 21 points and Trojan teammate Tate Allen added 10 points and four assists. JJ Lane had nine points and two assists while Drew Martin tallied seven points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Blake Holden produced seven points and four assists. Isaac Harris had five points while Max Weaton notched four points and seven rebounds.
The Trojans are 2-9 and host Southeast Conference foe Burlington Friday.
