FAIRFIELD — Fairfield couldn’t contain Keokuk on the hardwood Friday night.
The now SEC leading Chiefs pressured early, often and late on their way to a 67-21 victory over the Trojans.
With the loss, Fairfield drops to 0-7 and still is looking for its first SEC victory of the season after three straight losses.
It took Fairfield just around two minutes to find its first bucket of the night, a layin from Briana Steele. The early scoring struggles were a representation of the full 32 minutes as the Trojans scored just once more in the first period at the 1:35 mark.
Through that span, Keokuk dropped in 13 points itself and the Chiefs added two more before the end of the first quarter to make it 15-4.
The nine points was as close as Fairfield would come the rest of the evening as the Chiefs held the Trojans to five or less points in three of four quarters.
Keokuk put together its best scoring quarter of the night in the second. The Chiefs opened up the frame with a 7-0 run through two and a half minutes of action to push their lead to 22-4.
The Chiefs defense was a difference maker throughout the contest. Keokuk’s continued full court pressure created a multitude of extra opportunities, while it turn limiting the Trojan’s offensive possessions.
Fairfield first basket of the second period came at the 5:06 mark and the Trojans scored just six more points in the final three minutes.
On the contrary, Keokuk scored 15 points through the five minute period, which included a trifecta of three balls.
Heading into the second half, the Chiefs held onto a 37-12 lead.
The second half was more of the same. Fairfield was held to just nine points, four in the third and five in the fourth. Meanwhile, Keokuk went on to score 30 in the final two frames to seal it.
Fairfield will be back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 19 against Burlington on the road.
